Three very different trail projects – in Asburton, Hawke’s Bay and Wellington – are benefiting from Trail Fund’s latest general funding round, and no doubt a variety of riders will benefit as well.
Trail Fund is pleased to provide funding to first-time recipient Rotary Rivers Pathway Trust, who have raised more than $600,000 over the past three years to create ‘The Tukituki Trial’, a network of walking and cycling trails near the Tukituki River. The network includes a 12km limestone pathway for the leisure cyclist, a 35km hand-built singletrack along the river and Gum Tree Farm MTB Park, which currently has 6.5km of trails with a further 6km in the pipeline.
To help the organisation maintain its relatively new network, which to date has required a lot of manual raking and weed eating work, Trail Fund is funding the purchase of a much-needed Scrub Cutter and Backpack Blower.
Further south in Ashburton, the Mid Canterbury Mountain Club will be using its Trail Fund grant to install five maps and one entrance sign in key areas along its 12km River Trail Mountain Bike Track, which runs along the Ashburton River.
"An increasing number of local and visiting riders have requested more comprehensive and, fin our view, the benefits are three-fold," says club president James Reid. "Through signage we can ensure users know where they're going, promote our club and acknowledge our supporters."
In Wellington, members of BAMBA (Belmont Area Mountain Bike Association) have been working hard over the past five years to build trails for all levels. Having recently rounded out the lower grade end by building a family-friendly skills area, the next project was to build a technical grade 5 option. Work on Off Camber Daze (pictured above) is well underway and the Trail Fund grant will help cover the cost of materials including warratas and timber.
